At Hoagland Meat, we're proud to support the young minds of Idaho's 4-H program. Recently, we had the opportunity to process steers from Owyhee County, Payette County, Valley County and Malheur County, each destined for important causes! One of these amazing causes was a group of local businesses in Malheur County came together to purchase the cattle to donate the beef to the Oregon Food Bank! This program isn't just about providing quality beef; it's about fostering the next generation of ranchers, business leaders, and community advocates.

The Power of 4-H
The 4-H program offers invaluable opportunities for youth, teaching them responsibility, dedication, and the intricacies of livestock care. For example, all participants of the 4H program have meticulously raised their steers, ensuring they meet the highest standards. These animals represent more than just potential profit; they symbolize the hard work and determination of these young individuals. 4-H members who choose Market Beef for their project must tag or tattoo their steers or heifers and provide proof of ownership with a Brand Inspection or Recorded Iron Brand for at least 150 days. They care for their animals over a 130-day feeding period and must submit documentation like a brand inspection or bill of sale by local Extension Office deadlines. To complete the project, members also take five Animal Science lessons, gain at least five new skills (including Quality Assurance), and track these in their 4-H Animal Record Book. Finally, they deliver an oral presentation related to their project. These responsibilities teach essential skills that go beyond agriculture—skills like time management, financial planning, and ethical decision-making.
Building Generational Wealth
By purchasing these steers, individuals and businesses in the counties are not only investing in quality beef but are also contributing to the future success of these 4-H participants. This cycle of support helps create generational wealth, allowing these families to reinvest in their farms and education. It's a powerful way to build a stronger, more resilient community.
Opportunities for Growth
Through the 4-H program, Idaho youth have access to a wide range of resources and educational materials. From the "Beef Resource Handbook" to specialized lessons on animal science, 4-H provides everything needed to turn a young participant into a knowledgeable and skilled livestock producer. This comprehensive education equips them with the tools necessary to succeed in agriculture and beyond.
At Hoagland Meat, we take immense pride in our involvement with Idaho's 4-H program. This year, we had the opportunity to process steers from Owyhee County, Payette County, Valley County and Malheur County 4-H. This has allowed us to partner with the businesses and individuals that also support the 4-H community, all while nurturing the growth of young ranchers and community leaders. Our commitment goes beyond delivering top-quality beef; it's about investing in the future of these dedicated 4-H members and helping them build valuable skills and experiences. We are honored to play a role in their journey and proud to support the next generation of leaders.
